Passkeys > iOS (Safari)

Updated over a week ago

On iOS, Safari saves passkeys into iCloud Keychain / Passwords, protected by device biometrics or passcode.

Where passkeys are stored

  • iCloud Keychain

  • Viewable in Settings > Passwords (iOS 17/18 and later) or the Passwords app on devices that have it.

  • Private keys remain protected on-device and are end-to-end encrypted in iCloud Keychain.

How to view/manage

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Passwords (or open the Passwords app). Unlock with Face ID/Touch ID or passcode.

  2. You can delete, rename, or edit metadata for the entry, but the private key cannot be exported in plain form. Itโ€™s best to leave it unchanged to avoid any issues

Sharing and syncing

  • Syncing across your Apple devices: iCloud Keychain will sync passkeys across devices signed into the same Apple ID with iCloud Keychain enabled.

  • Sharing with other users: Apple provides mechanisms to share passwords and passkeys with people you trust using iCloud Passwords sharing (shared groups). In some scenarios, passkeys may also be transferred via AirDrop between nearby devices.
