Passkeys > Android (Chrome)

Updated over a week ago

Passkeys created in Chrome on Android are stored and managed by Google Password Manager (the Password Manager integrated with your Google account), or by a compatible third-party password manager if you configure it on Android 14+. The private key material is stored securely on-device and synced encrypted to the user’s Google account

Where passkeys are stored

  • Google Password Manager (in the user’s Google account) when using Chrome/Android’s built-in behavior.

  • When using a third-party manager (1Password, Bitwarden, etc.) and Android 14+ you can select that manager as the credential provider; the passkey vault will then live there.

  • The private key is protected by the device’s secure environment and encryption; sync uses end-to-end or strong encrypted backup mechanisms managed by Google or the chosen manager.

How to view/manage

  1. Open Settings → Google → Autofill → Password Manager or open passwords.google.com while signed into your Google account. (Turn on the password sync)

  2. You can delete or rename, but private key material is not exposed in plain text. It’s best to leave it unchanged to avoid any issues

Sharing and syncing

  • Sync across your devices: Google Password Manager will sync passkeys across devices signed into the same Google account when the password sync is on, subject to device security (screen lock, OS version) and user consent.

  • Sharing with other users: There is no generic, cross-account “share passkey” button in Chrome/Google Password Manager that hands a private key directly to another Google account as a simple export-import.
